Gun ban starts on January 10

The Commission on Election (COMELEC) will start implementing the gun ban on January 10 until June 9, 2010 in an effort to minimize election related violence according to PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa.  The issuance of Comelec Resolution 8714 prohibits private individuals from carrying firearms and identifies that only uniformed personnel in actual performance of their duties may bear firearms. As a result, permits of private individuals who are acting as bodyguards to politicians were recalled.
All candidates for elective posts as well as public and private individuals who may wish to have security escorts may file their requests before the Regional Joint Security Control Desks in their respective Comelec Regional Offices.  Comelec is allowing only two security personnel for each election candidate.
