Buses with Political Ads Illegal – COMELEC

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is now looking into the legality of political ads being posted on public transport busses and jeepneys plying within Metro Manila and nearby Provinces.  According to Comelec spokesman James Jimenez, this political strategy being used by candidates constitutes violation of  election laws mainly because the ads are “oversized”.

Jimenez clarified that they cannot go after the bus owners since the law does not cover private properties as long as the owners have given their consent to place the campaign materials on the vehicle.  However, the commission can hold the candidates responsible or anybody who has paid for such ads in case of sponsorships.  The campaign materials should not exceed the maximum size of  3x8 feet for streamers and 2x3 feet for posters.

LTFRB Calls for More Taxi Investors

Alberto Suansing, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chair calls for more Taxi investors to meet the demand of Metro Manila's growing number of commuters.  Around 6,000 taxi franchise are available which would replace the slots of abandoned taxi franchises since 2007.

Interested investors are enjoined to open a taxi fleet service with the requirements of Php 4 million as "show money", ample garage space and taxi units for the the current year.  LTFRB targets to start awarding 2,000 franchises this year.

Noynoy Woos Business Sector

Presidential aspirant Sen. Noynoy Aquino attended the Presidential Forum sponsored by the Makati Business Club (MBC) at the Rigodon Ballroom of Manila Peninsula in Makati City. In his prepared speech, Aquino assured the businessmen should he win the presidency, his office will offer a free and fair playing field for anybody who would want to conduct business in the country. Among Noynoy's business flatform include irradication of cronyism, proper revenue collection from BIR and Bureau of Customs, streamlining of the approval process for those opening a business and to put an end to smuggling.
