President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed into law yesterday the controversial Repblic Act 9994 known as Expanded Senior Citizens Act (ESCA) of 2010. According to presidential spokesman Gary Olivar The law grants Filipino elderly aged 60 and above, full exemption from the Value Added Tax (VAT).
Around five million Senior Citizens are expected to benefit from the discounts and privileges granted by ESCA. Said law is an amendment to the Senior Citizens Act of 1992 or Republic Act No. 7432 and was the brainchild of Senator Pia Cayetano.
