LTO stops RFID scheme


(LTO) Land Transportation Office Chief Arturo Lomibao issued a memorandum ordering the suspension of RFID Radio Frequency Identification Registration Scheme following the Supreme Court's issuance of Temporary Restraining Order.  Lomibao added that LTO's Legal Department is yet to receive a copy of the  TRO and that their lawyers will study on how to refund the payment of those who have already paid for their RFID once they get hold of the order.

The Supreme Court issued the TRO based on a petition by transport groups questioning on how the project was awarded to a private firm.  An additonal fee of P350.00 was charged for the registration of vehicles for this scheme.

LTO Starts Implementing RFID System


Land Transportation Office (LTO) today (January 4, 2010) starts implementing the radio frequency ID (RFID) system for all registered vehicles. The RFID is a sticker that contains a microchip that stores informations about the owner and the vehicles. The stickers cost P350 and is similar to the registration sticker on the vehicle's windshield.

The launch was met by protest from militant groups as they await the temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Supreme Court to stop its implementation.
