Bill and Melinda Gates to Invest $10B for Vaccines

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation announced plans to invest $ 10 billion for vaccines that they believe can prevent around 7.6 million lives under 5 for 2010-2019. Bill Gates said "We must make this a decade for vaccines", and Melinda Gates added that "Vaccines are a miracle", and that this was always the priority at the Gates Foundation.

Cory Swatch Sold-Out


A real collector's item, just hours after its launch, the Cory Aquino Swatch timepieces, all of 801 sets have been sold-out. The Swatch set include two watches which costs 8,100Php. The numbers 8 and 1 represents August 1, the day the democracy icon died.

Virgie Ramos of Gift Gate, exclusive distributor of Swatch in the Philippines, initiated this project which was approved by Swatch. Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala designed the watches that come with a book by Teddy Locsin, Jr. titled "A Woman Dressed in Sunshine".  Significantly, the straps bear "Ipagpapatuloy ko!" statement.

The Apple iPad Tablet Gets Official


Apple has just announced its newest addition to their lineup, the iPad. The product was presented by Steve Jobs and showcases an iPhone like interface. Users can also download and use existing iPhone apps, and soon specialized apps for the iPad such as the upcoming iWorks for iPad. It can browse the internet with wifi or 3G, play music, read e-books called iBooks that can be download from the iBookstore like  iTunes for music and videos and App Store for applications.

Expecting the Apple iTablet


Every news body is anticipating the upcoming unveiling of Apple's newest product. Though no official statement came from Apple, many point to the tablet as the newest addition to the existing media products lines of the company.

Cebu Dancing Inmates dances with Michael Jackson’s Choreographer



One thousand two hundred (1,200) Dancing Inmates from Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) performed and recorded a new video which will be included in the launch of  Michael Jackson’s “This is it” DVD.  No less than the King of Pop’s choreographer, Travis Payne, designed the dance number.  Payne spent two days in Cebu to record the dance with dancers Daniel Celebre and Dreis Reid.  The video was uploaded in YouTube by Sony Entertainment.

Mom of “Smoking Baby” in Facebook Faces Probe


The mother of the infamous “Smoking Baby” on Facebook is in hot water after she was reported to the police when she posted photos of her son “Ollie” smoking an unlit cigarette.  The police in Essex, U.K. took charge of the investigation when some concerned citizens notified the authorities about the Facebook photos.



The police traced the Facebook account and contacted the source, Rebecca Davey, the mother and paid a visit to her residence and told reporters that the matter was of “no immediate concern”.  Davey posted on her status “Some w***** reported me to the police abwt picture off ollie” to show her disgust over some people meddling into her private affairs.

O’Brien’s Final Tonight Show


Talkshow host and comedian Conan O’Brien will air his final “Tonight” show this evening after a $45 million buyout with NBC.  He thanked his fans and viewers for their support and for bringing him inspiration.  He got to sing “Free Bird” with Will Ferrel, Billy Gibbons and Beck.

O’Brien has not yet announced any future plans as part of his buyout deal included a prohibition to make another show until after September 1 and that he is not allowed to make television appearances or interviews for three months.

Freddie Aguilar: Marlene Responsible for Jason’s woes


Internationally acclaimed singer, Freddie Aguilar said in an interview that his sister Marlene, mother of road rage suspect Jason Ivler, is responsible for all that happened to Jason for she had all the chances to surrender her son to the authorities that could have prevented the bloody shoot-out incident last January 18.  Known as Ka Freddie, the singer said he felt very depressed about what happened to Jason and appealed for objectivity from the public and those handling the case.

Freddie also said that he had asked Jason if he really was involved in the case but the latter has denied any participation in the case.  Marlene likewise has denied in the past that she has knowledge in her son’s whereabouts.

Kris Aquino Reconciled with Husband James Yap



Kris Aquino told GMA News during a guesting stint in the show Family Feud, that she and cager-husband James Yap are trying to work their marriage out.  After more than a week of being in the political and showbiz limelight due to some marital issues, Kris has finally made amends with James and the family of Mayen Austria (a basketball fan of James whom Kris had allegedly had an altercation).

According to Kris, the couple and their two sons are now staying together in a rented condo in Taguig while waiting for the construction of their condo unit in Makati City.  She said that she decided to reconcile with James because she realized that the lives of their two sons are being disrupted by the controversy.

“Eid’l Adha” Now a Special Non-Working Holiday


President Gloria Arroyo has signed into law, Republic Act 9849 or the Act Declaring the Tenth day of Zhul Hijja, the Twelfth Month of the Islamic Calendar, a National Holiday for the observance of “Eid’l Adha” or feast of Sacrifice. This means that beginning this year, the whole country will observe the holiday on November 27-28.

Last year, the president declared “Eid’l Adha” as a special non-working holiday limited only to the ARMM or Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. Eid’l Adha is one of Islam’s two major festivals celebrated by 1.6 billion Muslims around the world

Bicol Hit by 5.3 Magnitude Quake



The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) announced that a moderate earthquake was recorded at 10:02AM yesterday, January 21, with an origin at about 148 kiometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.  PHIVOLCS’ advised all affected areas to expect aftershocks as the temblor had a shallow depth of focus with energy coming from around 35 kilometers from the ground. 


Said earthquake was tectonic in origin and was caused by the movement of the Philippine trench in the Eastern Luzon Section and was felt in nearby areas:  Intensity 4 in Legaspi City, Camalig and Bacacay; Intensity 3 in Viga and Virac.  No damages was reported in the said areas.

Rent a Movie from YouTube


Google, Inc. via YouTube has become a movie rental outlet directly competing with itunes, amazon, netfix and blockbuster. YouTube's initial project will showcase movies competing in the upcoming Sundace Film Festival.

For its initial offer of $3.99, a borrower may view a movie within a 48-hour period. Movie outfits are given a free hand for the amount of rental as well as the window time of one day to 45 days, within which a movie may be available for rent on YouTube. Under this scheme, YouTube gets an undisclosed commission per rental.

New York Times to Charge Online Readers on 2011


In 2011, New York Times will be charging internet readers for accessing their website thru a metered system to earn more revenues for the paper as well as to shoulder their internet expenses in maintaining their website. Under the metered system, readers are given a limited free access to a certain number of stories each month, in excess of such number, readers will have to pay certain fees.

Janet Robinson, The New York Times CEO explained that the paper needs more flexible revenue in order for them to cope with the economic cycles.  The implementation on 2011 is enough time for them to determine the amount of fees to be charged as well as how much free access will be given before they charge a reader.  Many internet economic experts have predicted that this move will make or break internet advertising.

Manila Bulletin Editor named Acting Press Secretary

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced to Malacanang Press Corps the appointment of Manila Bulletin Editor Crispulo Icban Jr. to replace Cerge Remonde who succombed to Cardiac Arrest earlier this week..  The announcement was made shortly before Remonde's body was brought to Malacanang for a two-day memorial service.

PGMA told reporters that she has chosen Icban due to her positive experience with Remonde that "It's good to have a Media Practitioner as a Press Secretary." Icban's appointment paper is being processed as of this writing.

Ivler's gun puts him in Road Rage Crime Scene


The National Bureau of Investigation  (NBI) identifies the recovered .45 caliber pistol of Jason Ivler from Monday's raid, the same weapon used in killing Renato Ebarle, Jr.

Ballistic test results conducted by the NBI reveal identical bullet marking from the pistol used by Ivler last Monday and on the one recovered in last year's shooting incident.

Comelec Declares Erap Can Run for President


Comelec Second Division today (January 20,2010) allows Joseph "Erap" Estrada to run for president this coming May elections. It dismissed the case of disqualifcation filed by a certain Evelio Pormento. Under the ruling, Erap is not covered by the constitutional ban and may run, as he is not an incumbent president. And that his pardon restored all his civil and political rights.

Erap was present during the promulgation and was happy with the decision saying "It is is a victory of the Filipino people", and that decision might boost his popularity.

Obama Made His First Tweet



President Barack Obama made a technological history as he became the first commander-in-chief to post a message on Twitter, a social networking site/microblogging service.  This happened during the President’s visit at the headquarters of American Red Cross when he and the First Lady went to promote aid to Earthquake-stricken Haiti.

A media staffer of the Red Cross wrote a message on Twitter using the handle @RedCross that reads “President Obama and the first lady are here visiting our disaster operation center now” and subsequently asked Obama to hit “Update” on the screen to which the president gladly agreed.  A follow-up tweet was made by a staffer saying the last tweet was made by President Obama himself as it was his first ever tweet.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde Dies


Cerge Remonde was pronounced dead at exactly 11:51 am today. Remonde, who currently serves as Press Secretary was rushed to Makati Medical Center after he was found unconciuos in his Bel-Air residence.
Palace officials have confirmed earlier that Remonde was brought to MMC at around 10:40 this morning, and was being revived due to a heart attack. An official statement from the hospital is yet to be announced.

Road Rage Gunman Jayson Iveler Caught by the NBI


Early Monday morning (January 19, 2010), suspect Jayson Ivler was caught by NBI Agents at their Blue Ridge Home in Quezon City. Ivler was hiding at a stock room, when agents of the NBI saw a tattooed arm amidst the pile of mannequins stored in the room. NBI officer Angelito Magno then yelled and told Ivler get out of the room peacefully, but Iveler responded with a barrage of gun shot. Armed with a M-16 baby armalite and a .45 caliber pistol, he sprayed bullets toward the NBI agents, and wounding Magno and NBI Agent Anna Labao.

Ivler was rushed at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center after sustaining 2 bullet wounds during the encounter. And was declared in stable condition after a portion of his intestines had to be removed because of a bullet wound. His mother Marlene Aguilar will be charged with obstruction of justice for hiding his son at their Blue Ridge home, and making statements last year referring to his son being already in Hawaii. Jayson Ivler was charged for shooting and killing the son of MalacaƱang Undersecretary Renato Ebarle, Sr. during a traffic altercation last year, and will also be charged for evading arrest and for the assault on the agents, he might also be charge with illegal possession of firearms as no gun license was issued to him.

Kris Aquino Leaves Family Home


Actress and TV host Kris Aquino, in an interview with Boy Abunda, admitted that she and her two sons, Joshua and Baby James, have left their family abode in Valle Verde 2 and are now staying in the house of her sister, Pinky. Kris said she needs “time and space”. “Kasi bugbog na bugbog na ako. Siguro naman hindi ako mag-i-snap ng ganun kung hindi marami na kaming pinagdaanan. So, now I'm just saying as any wife who's watching me now or any girl in a relationship is watching me now, gusto mo naman ng assurance na mahal ka, nirerespeto ka at hindi ka niloloko. Yun lang."

While the couple are not living in the same roof as of this moment, Kris said that she and James are in constant communication and that there are still occasions that they go together such that they both attended a lunch in her brother-in-law’s house. Kris asks for understanding from her fans and the public and request that her domestic issue be spared from being used to destroy her brother Noynoy’s presidential bid.

Intensity 5.3 Earthquake in Mindanao


Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum confirmed that the agency has recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake at 8:07AM yesterday in Mindanao. The epicenter was located at 32 kilometers southeast of Tagum City in Davao and tectonic in origin.

It was felt in Davao City with intensity 4, intensity 3 in Tagum City, and President Roxas in North Cotabato; Intensity 2 in Matalam and Makilala in North Cotabato, Kidapawan City and General Santos City, and Intensity 1 in the Caraga region and Davao Oriental

Kris Aquino confronted alleged girlfriend of husband James Yap


TV host and actress Kris Aquino allegedly stormed through the residence of Mayen Austria, a resident of Valle Verde 2 in Pasig City, and confronted Austria and her mother outside their home around 4:00PM yesterday. The Austrias were said to have been entertaining some guests when this happened, according to Gabby Lopez (not the ABS-CBN boss), an uncle of Austria. Boy Abunda, Aquino’s bestfriend, denied the allegation, saying that Aquino was “very cool and polite” when she showed up at the Austria’s residence.

According to Abunda, Mayen was only a fan of James’ basketball team, Purefoods and there is no affair going on between Yap and Austria. “It was unfair to say that Kris quarreled with the girl. She spoke with caution and temperance.”

Global Relief on Facebook


After the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti last Tuesday, top social networking site Facebook has launched its "Global Relief" page so that Facebook members can give their assistance to victims of natural calamities and disasters. To date, the said site has generated almost 7,000 fans and continuously growing by the minute.

Andrew Noyes, spokesperson of Facebook said "The devastating earthquake in Haiti has underscored the Internet's critical role in connecting the world's population in times of tragedy. In response to this and in anticipation of future disasters, Facebook has launched the Global Relief on Facebook page where our more than 350 million members can educate themselves and find out how to help."

Tamano: Cheating in Automated Polls is Easy





Nationalista Party Senatorial Candidate Adel Tamano demonstrated at a media forum yesterday how cheating is possible in an automated system. According to Tamano, the sanctity of the ballot is at stake since they “pass through a number of hands before it reaches the machine” and with that, a lot of possibilities for cheating is open. 


One way of cheating can be done is if someone shades the ballots with a pencil and then erases it before giving it to the voter, that way there will be no physical trace of the pencil mark but the machine would still be able to appreciate the pencil shade.  If this happens, the machine will interpret it as either invalid, in case the voter shaded a different answer, or counted in favor of the cheater should the voter leaves this item blank.

Bomb Threat on Comelec



The Comelec office in Intramuros, Manila received a bomb threat around 10:26AM yesterday according to Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez.  An unidentified man made a phone call  to Comelec and said that a bomb was planted  on the third floor of the annex building.  The man claimed that the threat has something to do with the disqualification case of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.

Said call was immediately reported to Manila Police District-Explosive and Ordinance Division (MPD-EOD) for investigation but did not find any bomb.

Kris and James sings at Sharon’s Birthday Concert



Actress Kris Aquino and cager James Yap surprised the Sharon Cuneta as well as the concert crowd of Araneta Colliseum when said husband and wife belted the song “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo” as a present to the Megastar.  The audience was treated for a rare moment when James, known for being a media shy went out in a black suit to sing with Kris.

Araneta was filled with cheering not for James’ basketball show-off but for his singing, the appreciative spectators applauded as well as the very pleased Birthday Celebrant.
